As I am about to embark on a 6-week stay in an Airbnb in Mexico City, I am going to link back to an old video that I made about How to Be a Better Airbnb Guest, specifically How to Use Airbnb after you have already made a reservation!
Reach out to your host about 24 hours before your arrival. Confirm the address of their apartment.
Ask about the best transportation option to their apartment. How much would a taxi cost (remember this if a driver is trying to rip you off). What about a bus or train station nearby?
Read the house rules, does your host want quiet hours after 10:00 PM or for you to water their plants?
Coordinate the check-in. Who will be letting you in? If it is not the host, can you get their friend’s contact info in case something goes wrong. If they are leaving you a key, where will the key be? Inquire at this point if the Wi-Fi password will be posted somewhere in the apartment in their absence.
Test out the Wifi at your Airbnb– Do this in front of your host in case you can not read the password. If it is not functioning ask to get it resolved fast.
Learn about the kitchen – Do you need to light a match to start up the stove?
Find out about the hot water- In some countries, you need to flip a switch or wait a small period to get hot water.
The Keys– Test them out in front of your host, in case they happen to be really tricky to operate
The garbage- Ask when and where to dispose of it.
Air Conditioning and Heating- If it doesn’t appear obvious, inquire about how the a/c and heating units work.
Local Suggestions- Find out where the nearest grocery store is or what their favorite restaurant is.
Tell your host immediately if you break something or their is an issue in the apartment. Airbnb hosts appreciate honesty and direct communication.
Find out if your host wants to pick up the key from you or if you can just leave it in the apartment and lock the door.
Make sure to wash any dirty dishes, take out the garbage, and keep the apartment in generally tidy shape. Hosts are much more likely to leave you a positive reference if you leave their apartments in almost the same condition they came in.
